Introduction

Sports at St James' is a very important part of our school life.

The emphasis is on everybody taking part in as many different sports as possible, making sure that they have fun! We pride ourselves on our sense of sportsmanship and fair play.

We are happy to say that we have a school full of children who want to take part in different sports and do their best.

Kwick Criket 2011

St James Year 5 and 6 Cricket Team Our Journey began in the tournament with schools from our local area competing against each other. We won our first game by a short distance. Not the same scenario in the next game where we managed a great win by quite a few runs. So the next game was simple: win and you go through to the city wide finals, lose and you are going back to school. Thankfully we won against St. Johns and we were entered into the city wide finals! In the first game, disaster struck as we lost by one run in controversial circumstances. Winning our next three games left us in the position with two other teams tied on the same number of points as us. It came down to run rate. This meant however many runs you scored, including lost wickets. Losing a wicket meant you lost five runs. Whoever had scored the most runs won the tournament. As the three teams waited anxiously the team that finished third was announced…It was not us. The second team was announced…It was not us. That left only one team that could have won…US! That won us the title of City Wide Kwik Cricket Champions and entered us into a third tournament where teams from all over the county came down to compete. Places like Blackpool, Burnley, Liverpool and Trafford. In this tournament we did not have as much success as losing our first three games meant we did not qualify for the knock out stages. We still had a good day and returned with our heads held high. 2010-06-21 Athletics

On Monday 21st of June 2010 six children from year 5 and 6 went to do some athletics with Mrs Bagley at sport city. We were not the only school to do it as there were about 20 other schools at the event and about 480 people all together. It was a really hot day and we were all really hot! The first event we did was the long jump. It was fun but we got loads of sand in our shoes! The second event was the 600 metre run which was very hard because it was so hot, but Ben Corbett did very well and came second. Eddie Ang also did very well because he found it very hard to keep up with the rest of us but still ran his hardest. I think he is very brave because he did not give up and that’s what a true athlete would do. Then after that, we did the 75 metre sprint which was hard after the 600 meter run. We then did an event where you had to throw a ball as far as you could. Kieron threw it the furthest out of all of us. He did very well at it. All in all we had a great day and the weather was lovely! Pablo Fernandes (Yr6)

On Friday last week Y4 and Y5 went on a 2 kilometre run around Sport city. Some children found it pretty easy but for some it was a real challenge. When we arrived the weather was pretty miserable and wet. Luke Merril had an amazing time of only 7 minutes and I was pleased with my 8 minutes. Over all I think everyone enjoyed themselves and made a great achievement in the end. It was pretty amazing to think that everyone who started the run finished it, which shows good spirit. After that we did some fun activities around SportCity all to do with Athletics. After that, sadly, we had to go back school, back to lessons! Ben Corbett (Y5)

2010-06-17 The Rounders Partnership Finals

On Thursday 17th June after school, a team from Year 6 went to the Rounders SSP Finals tournament at Whalley Range High School. It was a beautiful day and the sun was shining. There were four schools there, including us and we played all three matches really well. Unfortunately, we didn’t win any but on the last match we did really well. I can’t believe I didn’t bat more than once on each game! Sam in my class did a good hit and scored a fantastic rounder. Niamh was the only one left in on the first game and did a fantastic hit and got all the way round. On her second hit, she didn’t do as well and only got to second base. As there was only Niamh left in, the game came to an end. I thought we did really really well, despite the sun getting into our eyes when we were trying to catch the ball! We came fourth out of fourth, and didn’t get a medal. It would have been nice to go home with a medal, but the other schools were really good and playing against them was a challenge. On the whole, we did great and I would really like to take part in another rounders tournament again. Natasha Walker (Y6)
