Language and Cultural Links at St.James
We have been busy in school with our global links. Many staff have visited our link school in Beijing over the last three years and children have exchanged handwritten letters and recipes for traditional foods. Last year the school was closed for a few months for “seismic structural strengthening” so hopefully this year will see the children writing to each other again. We have set up a link with Manchester University who are providing two Masters students to work in KS2 as part of their Intercultural Engagement Project. Elly from Mexico will help with Spanish classes and Qiuli from China will help with Y6 doing Mandarin, China project and an after school club. Over the past few months we’ve had visits from other Mandarin and Spanish speakers who have added a buzz to the children’s language lessons as they show off their skills with native speakers! Next time you are in school have a look at the Language and Culture noticeboard in the hall to see some of the children’s written work. updated: 14 January 2014 UpdatesChinese Penfriends
Children in Years 5 and 6 have written to children at our link school in Beijing using Mandarin and English and have now received replies, much to their excitement! They have been very impressed with the Chinese children’s level of English as well as their art skills. Comments from India (Y5) and Gabriel and Osama (Y6) include “amazing”, “fantastic” and “I’ve learned interesting things about someone in a bigger country”. Our pupils are already writing their replies, thinking of questions to ask about their school and hobbies. Spanish Speaking Website As mentioned in the last update we have been lucky to have had visits from a Mexican MA student from Manchester University, Nahielly, who has almost finished her project with us. She has set up web pages with contributions from our school, a school in Spain and one in Mexico. She is in control of all content, checking all contributions before posting. Some of Year 4 have already seen their work on the site ! If you would like to access it the address is mexmanwiki.wikispaces.com. Nahielly manages the pages so all entries are checked by her before posting. Mrs Fay June 2014 |
