Welcome to Year 5

Welcome Back to Summer 2!

This half-term, Year 5 will be stepping back in time to explore what life was like for children in Manchester during World War Two. We will learn about key events of the war, including The Blitz, evacuation, rationing and the Home Front, while discovering how our local area was affected. We are also very excited for our upcoming visit to the Stockport Air Raid Shelters, where children will experience what life was like during air raids and deepen their understanding of this important period in history.

In English, we will be researching World War Two and using our findings to write informative non-chronological reports. We will also be inspired by the powerful true story of Emmanuel’s Dream, writing biographies about para-athletes and exploring the message that disability is not an inability. In Science, we will be learning about changes in humans, including growth and development, life stages and puberty.

Alongside our classroom learning, we will be preparing for our end-of-year production, Aladdin, practising songs, performances and dance routines. It promises to be a busy and memorable final half-term filled with exciting learning opportunities.

We’re really looking forward to an engaging, creative and fun end to the school year!

Take care,
Miss Cox and Mrs Hardie

English
This half-term, Year 5 will explore World War Two through a range of reading and writing opportunities. Children will learn how to research information, take effective notes and write informative non-chronological reports based on their findings. We will also be inspired by the true story Emmanuel’s Dream by Laurie Ann Thompson, using it to write biographies about para-athletes while exploring the powerful message that disability is not an inability.
Maths
We will focus on Measure, Volume and Negative Numbers. Children will convert between metric and imperial units of measure, including kilograms, kilometres and units of time, and use timetables to solve problems. We will also estimate and compare volume and capacity, as well as compare, order and calculate the difference between negative numbers.
PSHE
Our PSHE learning will focus on being global citizens. Children will explore their responsibility towards the environment and consider ways they can live more sustainably. We will also revisit personal safety and healthy relationships through an age-appropriate lesson linked to FGM, building on our previous learning in Relationships.

Say Hello to Tyson!

This year, Year 5 has adopted a jaguar through WWF, linked to our English, Geography, and Art topics. Jaguars are the largest cats in the Americas, but they are sadly under threat because their rainforest homes are being destroyed, and they are sometimes hunted.

By adopting a jaguar, we are helping to protect their habitats, ensure their safety, and secure a future for jaguars in the wild.

We are proud to be jaguar protectors!
