Welcome to Year 5

Welcome Back to Spring Term 1!

We hope you had a wonderful Christmas break and are ready for another exciting half-term in Year 5! This term, we’ll begin a brand-new adventure as we journey north into Scandinavia. We’ll explore the stunning landscapes, unique cultures and contrasting climates of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark, comparing life there to our own here in the UK.

In English, we’ll dive into the mysterious illustrations of The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, using the intriguing images to inspire our own gripping story openings. We’ll then explore the surreal, atmospheric tale The Skull by Jon Klassen, writing our own opening chapters that imagine what led up to the events in the story.

Science will focus on the Properties of Materials, where we’ll investigate how materials behave, change, dissolve and combine. In Art, we’ll take inspiration from Giacometti’s striking human forms, creating expressive sculptures that explore proportion and movement.

Get ready for a half-term full of creativity, curiosity and imagination - from Scandinavian landscapes to mysterious stories and artistic adventures!

Take care,
Miss Cox and Mrs Hardie

Say Hello to Tyson!

This year, Year 5 has adopted a jaguar through WWF, linked to our English, Geography, and Art topics. Jaguars are the largest cats in the Americas, but they are sadly under threat because their rainforest homes are being destroyed, and they are sometimes hunted.

By adopting a jaguar, we are helping to protect their habitats, ensure their safety, and secure a future for jaguars in the wild.

We are proud to be jaguar protectors!
